<image:caption>To create the white border and to secure the boot covers up, I schemed up a way to create a flap that the actual boots could tuck into. I first stitched the inside edge of my white pleather on the outer piece directly to my boot covers. Then, wrong sides together, I stitched the outer edge of the inner and outer pieces together. (This pleather won’t fray, so no worries about the exposed raw edges) The inner edge of my inner piece was left completely unstitched, allowing me to slide my actual boot inside and secure the boot covers up. If you need more explanation, below is a quick tutorial using some scrap fabric!</image:caption>

<image:caption>For fabric sourcing, I started researching based off Cosmic Coterie’s recommendations. I ended up picking up 4 yards of Online Fabric Store’s purple peau de soie for the skirt, collar, and hood. For the bows, glove rolls, and boots, I knew I wanted something with a little more zhuzh than bridal satin, and stumbled onto Yaya Han’s Fantasy Dupioni in light blue. This fabric has a cornflower blue warp with a warm pink weft, giving the fabric a purple sheen when the light catches it just right. While Yaya’s cosplay fabric line still exists, the Fantasy Dupioni seems to be mostly, if not entirely discontinued — luckily, past me picked up 6 yards in December 2018!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was my first time taking on a project of my own design, so I started with some not-great concept art to give myself a point of reference moving forward. (I’m a terrible artist, but considering how long this ended up taking, I am SO glad I actually did this!) I wanted my design mostly based on Sailor Moon’s duel-tone color scheme, and kept it relatively simple to let both influences shine through, both together and separately.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The final detail left was the chest gem and the crossbones. I initially cast a gem with epoxy resin and red glitter back in 2019, but Thea needed to cast a new one to fit the crossbone design she was 3D printing. These pieces weren’t vapor smoothed, and were instead sanded and hit with some filler primer. The same bone color as the mask/staff was used for the crossbones, and the brooch bezel was painted with Angelus 18K Gold. The gem was superglued into the bezel and after supergluing some Velcro to the back, the gem was ready for the bow. The tiny gems on the boots were made the same way, and were also attached using Velcro in case they need to be moved to a different pair of shoes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The bows for both the chest and back were constructed according to Cosmic Coterie’s tutorial. Since this “fantasy dupioni” is 100% artificial fibers, I used heavyweight sew-in interfacing to avoid the risk of damaging the fabric with fusible interfacing. The interfacing was sewn into my inner bow piece, 1/4” away from my eventual seam line. The excess interfacing was cut away, then the layers were stitched together right sides together. After turning them right side out and lightly pressing them with a press cloth, I had very some very crisp and clean bows with no visible stitching!</image:caption>

<image:caption>While I worked on the boots and some other Dragon*Con projects, Thea was hard at work on the staff. The staff head and details were being 3D printed in ABS filament and we tracked down some spray paint the same shade of purple as the skirt. Once the pieces were finished 3D printing, Thea vapor smoothed them with acetone, cutting sanding time down significantly. Some more Rustoleum filler primer, a little sanding, and a coat of paint later, the staff was assembled and ready to go!</image:caption>

<image:caption>After cutting, I tacked the included pleats on the front and back to give some shape, then added my side seam pockets. I’m already a big believer in putting pockets in every garment ever, but I went a step further and added zippers into my pockets as well. If I know I’ll be dancing all night, I prefer to not bring a bag with me, since it’s just something else for me to keep up with. Zippered pockets mean I can just zip up my phone and wallet and know they’ll stay in place all night! If you’re familiar enough with inseam pockets and lined zipper pouches, this upgrade is easy, only takes a little extra time, and is 100% worth it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Construction Blog - May Queen Apron — Midsommar</image:title>
<image:caption>We had a few different ideas on how to achieve the blue embroidery on the edge of Dani’s apron in the movie, and set out to the fabric store to find something in the linen/gauze/slub family. We got lucky when we found this lightweight gauzy cotton with a blue embroidered design already along the warp of the fabric. Score! All I had to do now was assemble in a way that kept these designs along the outer edge.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Construction Blog - May Queen Apron — Midsommar</image:title>
<image:caption>I decided to use the center of the design as my seam line, since the whole design was a bit too large for the size apron we were going for. I measured 3/8” off from that center for seam allowance, then cut off the rest of the fabric. The fabric was then pieced together so that the embroidery went along the outer perimeter of the cape. Since this fabric was pretty thin and airy, I lined it with some leftover white cotton from my stash. I knew Maggie was wearing a dress without pockets, so I went ahead and added some side seam pockets inside the apron to give them a place to stash their phone at the convention. I used to same white cotton to create a simple tie, and it was convention ready!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Thanks to my tendency to grab Simplicity patterns whenever Joann is a running a steep discount on them, I have a reasonable stash of patterns and blocks to use as a jumping off point on most of my projects. However, after seeing Annika Victoria’s video on Tailornova, a digital pattern design software that uses your own measurements, I’d been itching to try it out on something — a bespoke magical girl dress with some specific design elements I wanted to try out felt like the perfect excuse. After taking Thea’s measurements, I went in and decided on full bishop sleeves, princess seams, an invisible zipper, and a full circle skirt ending just at the knee.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After a quick mockup to make sure everything would fit Thea, I started with the bodice. All raw edges were separately overlocked to prevent fraying, then I assembled and pressed my bodice pieces. I gathered up the wrist of my bishop sleeves and attached them to my bias-cut cuff. This fabric ended up being a bit too thick for the level of gathers I was doing, so next time I’ll probably angle my sleeve inwards towards the wrist to reduce some bulk without losing too much volume. After attaching my cuff, I gently pressed my seams upwards to keep everything in place and enhance the volume.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Next up was the full circle skirt. Tailornova divided the skirt into 3 pieces — one front piece and two back pieces. Raw edges were again overlocked, then I added some pockets to my side seams. The battery pack for Thea’s wig would need to go somewhere, so I measured out some scrap fabric against the battery pack, sewed it into a little pouch, then basted it into the seam allowance of the skirt towards the back — this way, the battery pack could go from the wig, down the back, and safely nestle in the pouch.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Turning my foam pattern into a fabric pattern ended up being easier than expected. Raw edges toward the toe and the heel were faced and understitched to keep everything in place, while the front ankle piece was fully lined and also understitched. The upper calf part was mostly lined, with the lining cutting off around the ankle. Lining the calf allowed me to sneak the front elastic into the seam, so I could avoid all topstitching. To create the brace, black nylon webbing was sewn onto the calves, with the bottom being superglued at the base of the heels. My boot covers were finally superglued onto my base shoes, and were finally (actually!) wearable.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I bought a yard of black stretch pleather from Mood Fabrics for something else years ago, so I pulled that out for some thigh high “leather” boots for Cinder. I first painted the back of the heel black and the sole red with regular acrylic paint, and sealed with Angelus Finisher 600. Invisible zips were placed in the back seam toward the heel to increase ease of putting on/taking off. Once my paint was dry and my covers were sewn together, the covers were carefully pinned to the sole and superglued in place. After this, I had to punch out and hammer in 60 eyelets for across shoes. 1/4” black elastic laced up both shoes for both comfort and fit.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For the brooch, I got Thea to 3D model and print the brooch using Polymaker PolyTerra PLA filament. We didn’t fully smooth out the print lines for sake of time, and instead just hit it with a few coats of Rustoleum filler primer before quick sanding and painting. I had ambitions for painting/dyeing craft feathers, but crunch meant I ended up making some craft foam feathers instead with some leftover 2mm craft foam at probably 4:30am one night. The feathers were glued directly onto the backside of the brooch, and the brooch attaches to the cape with Velcro.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To make Cinder’s glove and monster claws, I first started by making cheat gloves out of the same four way stretch spandex as the bodysuit. Instead of stitching the fingertips, I left them open and long. I bought a pack of extra long, full length acrylic nail tips off Amazon and matched them to my own nails to keep the claws proportional to my hand. The nails were then hot glued into the open fingertips of the gloves to keep them in place, and stitched together on my machine. (Hot tip: just hand sew these seams. There was way too much going on here for a machine and made the end result a little too messy.) Not the neatest work, but easily passes the five foot rule! The longer sleeve and opera length glove completely concealed my not-monster arm, so no prosthetic work or makeup for the con would be necessary.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Starting with the bodysuit, I pulled out Simplicity Kwik Sew 3052 from my stash to get me started instead of self drafting. This pattern features a center front and back seam, a collar, and sleeves, making it a solid block to work with. I shortened the legs into shorts, skipped the right sleeve entirely, and shortened the left sleeve to fit into the glove for Cinder’s monster arm. A full matching zip was placed in the back seam (which would be covered by the cape), and a slit for the gold decorative zip was sliced into the left side of the front. The gold zipper pull was glued into place to prevent any mishaps at the convention.</image:caption>
